WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

You know what you felt. You know what was said. So why do you feel crazy?

You know something felt off. You know what was said had an edge to it. You know the energy shifted. You know you are not imagining the pattern.

And yet somehow, by the end of it, you are the one explaining yourself, defending your tone, questioning your memory, or wondering whether you made too big a deal out of something that very clearly did not feel right.

"Distortion doesn't make you wrong.

It just makes you feel like you have to prove you're right."

THE REAL PICTURE

That’s what distortion does. It pulls attention away from what happened and puts it onto your reaction. It scrambles the moment just enough to make you second-guess yourself.

It makes you feel like clarity is something you now have to earn back.

You don’t. You were clear before the conversation started. This guide helps you get back there.

Gaslighting isn't always dramatic. Most of the time, it's quieter than that.

It's not always someone saying "you're crazy." A lot of the time it is someone denying what they said after they already said it. Someone pretending your reaction came out of nowhere. Someone acting confused so that you start explaining yourself instead of paying attention to what just happened. It can sound like any of these:

“That’s not what I said.”

“You took it the wrong way.”

“You always do this.”

“I was just joking.”

“You’re too sensitive.”

“That never happened.”

“You’re remembering it wrong.”

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

“It’s not that deep.”

“Here you go again.”

“You’re the only one who sees it that way.”

“That wasn’t my intention.”

Not every phrase is automatically gaslighting. The issue is the pattern. If someone regularly denies, minimizes, twists, or recasts reality in a way that leaves you confused and self-doubting — that matters. You don't need a courtroom-level case file to notice a pattern is distorting your sense of self.

7 Signs You're Being Distorted

1

You leave more confused than when you started

You were clear on what bothered you. Now you’re foggy, defensive, and trying to piece it back together.

2

The focus keeps moving off their behavior onto your reaction

Instead of addressing what they said or did, the conversation becomes about your tone, your timing, your sensitivity, your delivery.

3

They treat patterns like random drama

You bring up something that has happened more than once. They act like you’re reacting to one tiny isolated moment

4

They speak with certainty while making you question obvious things

Confidence is not proof. Some people say false things very calmly.

5

You start overexplaining things you already know to be true

Extra details, examples, context — because you can feel your own clarity slipping and you’re trying to hold onto it.

6

You feel guilty for bringing something up at all

Not because you were wrong — but because the conversation was twisted until you felt like the problem for noticing it.

7

Your body felt it before your mind tried to clean it up

Tension. Tightness. A pit in your stomach. A sudden urge to prove yourself. Your body often recognizes distortion before your mind has language for it. Pay attention to that.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF

You're tired of leaving conversations confused when you walked in clear.

✦   You keep replaying conversations trying to figure out how you ended up apologizing for something they did.

✦   You’ve started to wonder if you’re “too sensitive” — not because you believe it, but because someone keeps saying it.

✦   You can feel in your body that something is off, but you can’t always put language to it fast enough.

✦   You’re in a relationship — romantic, professional, or family — where you consistently leave interactions doubting yourself.

✦   You want to stay grounded in what you know to be true without having to turn every conversation into a battle.

This isn't about diagnosing anyone. It's about recognizing what's happening to you — and having the clarity and language to stop handing your reality over to someone who benefits from your confusion.

FROM DR V

I know what it's like to leave a conversation wondering what just happened to you.

You go in grounded. You come out foggy. And the worst part isn’t the confusion — it’s the work you have to do afterward to get back to yourself. Replaying it. Journaling it. Talking it out with someone just to hear them say, “No, you’re not crazy.”

I made this guide because that work shouldn’t be that hard. You should be able to name what’s happening while it’s happening — and have something concrete to hold onto when someone tries to make you doubt what you clearly experienced.

You’re not dramatic. You’re not too sensitive. You’re not the problem for noticing the pattern.

Sometimes you’re just not confused. Sometimes someone is distorting. And now you’ll know the difference.

Respectfully, Dr. V
